ANCIENT JAPANBSÉ Screens.
Most travellers and wiiters versed in the art lore of Japan have familiarized us with the pra. clous values, the country places on the oldest of lis furalture screens, their decorativa quaint ness, and the important place they take in avery family with riches to bequeath and tradi· slona to maintalo. Hitherto, however, many of the specimens brought over plecemsal have been either unprepossessing ormOD ACCOBible to the ordinary connoisseur, so that the collec tion of Afty or sixty now arranged by Wears. Yamanaka, of New Bond-street, is a privilege and an opportunity worth prizing, „Bat, color. 10nately, screenu demând much more room for their display thin ordinary pictoras or art ob-', jects, and the firm have done, witaly in be. stowing their collection about the galleries of the Royal Society of British Artlata in Suffolk. strent, Pall Mall. The exhibits are of all sizes and character, from the two-leaf dwarf to the six-leaf monster stretching wall across a room; but the male feature is their deeply decorative beauty, a quality which has defind, in most cases, the ravages of atmosphere and time.
As most people know, the ground in a dry lacquer of gold or silver leaf, laid on in aquara and treated until it appears as an unbroken aur. face, and it is only after thatarnishing produced by a century or two that the squares stand out distinctly and proclaim the artist's method. Where be has used 'silver fox ble moon, it has turned black, and this intensifies the effect of arbitrary convention which stamps all Japanese decorative work. As for the impasto method, wherever it kay boun rasorted to, it has been used with care, and there has bien lletió or no scaling of the pigment or parting from the main surface.
One might expatiate at length on details and probabilitiery it auffices that the exhibits be long in the main to the savanteenth captury, though one or two are believed to be good deal oldes. There has been, as might have been ́expeciad, extreme difficulty in assigolog dates and authorship, and in a graceful preface to the catalogue prepared for this oxibition Mr. Arthur Morrison declines to accept any per. sonal responsibility for the attributioni. As for present values, the specimens shows range' from £50 o ten times that amount, and, as many hava bens almády sold, it is clear that the attention they receive from nativa connaisseurs - in Japan is likely to be enhanced by tha, an-
thusiasm of collectors over hers.
