THE MINING DYPARTMENT.....

It is with the first of the three big depart ments that we are prompt to deal today by the receipt of a brochure entitled "The Mining Enterprise of the Mitegi-Firm," from the local office of the M.BK. That section of the firm's business is of special interest to Hongkong. since it probably controls about half the entire aggregate of tonnage employed in the Japanese coal trade with Hongkong. Whether on board ship, in the big factories of Hongkong, or in the domestic kiteten "Miike lump and "dust" have almost bcme household words in the Colony, Familiar

The production of the Mitsui colliesies make up more than oss» sixth of the total coal output of the Empire-a fact which shows what an important position tha, Mitsuis occupy in the coal industry of Japan.

Should the water in the tube, through any cause, bs of a greater or less density than that in which the vessel is fontlog, its level will automatically adjust itself higher or lower in proportion to the head measured from the lowest point of the connection,

AMERICA'S SHIPPING TRADE.

A STORY OF DECLINE.

Mr. Lewis Nixon, writing un " Tha Crime of our Vanished Ships," bewails the miserable position of America's mercantile marine, and discusses what might be done, not exacity to recover fost ground, but to get American goods, carried in American bottoms, The article is timely, because of the Bill before Congress (or shortly to come before.k), and supposed to be favoured by President Taft, to re-establish America's mercantile marine. This Bill, the Humphrey Bill, the writer thinks in adequate, as it is based upon "the wrong principle of subsidy,"

*** It provides not only for increased subsidies for ocean mail service, but also for preferential tonnage taxes in favour of American vessels and "fres ships." In other words, it will allow any American to buy a steal" steamship pot less than 2,500 100%, to be used under the American flug in foreign trade.

A BILLIARD NOVALIY

LIGHTING UP THE POCKETA

In recent championship billiard matchen, the dull look of the pockets has been a causs, of complilat on the part of the players, and the necessity of a stror ger illaminant than the gas chandelier to throw up those targets of the billiard table, the six evenly placed pockets, were made fully apparent.

It'i of interest to learn that an invention which treats, with the important matter of pocket lighting is being given actual trial in London by several famous cuists. The light is set at the back of the pockets throwing up the whole apertura sharp and clear to the player's eye without in any way being subject to damage. In short, the" pocket searchlight" is at once so orastiental and useful adjunct to the billiard table, readering the game un doubtedly easier for the making ofthe winning, and losing hasard.

If they had been erected in brick of stonework, the buildings would, without doubt, hare either collapsed entirely, or been so damaged as to be unsafe for use without being entirely, re- constructed. The firit cost is not excessivo, and the most artistic effects can be more easily introduced than in stone or brick-work. Re- inforced concrete fa enilialy fireproof.
