SCIENCE OF TAR SEA..
PRINCE ALBERT or Monaco's WORK OF RESEARCH.
THE OCEAOGRAPHICAL MUSEUM.
fio Kusin Klong
The palatial Oceanographical Museum at Monte Carlo, begun ten years ago, and sans ta ba: Maugurated, was established by Prince Albert of Monaco with the view of fostering and advancing the scienen of the son in all its branches.
The Prince's connection with the exploration of the sea stretches back to comparatively youthful days, to the period, in fact, when, as a' lieutenant, herstired from service in the Spanish Navy. He then look to the sea on his own Account, and, in various ensall vessels, made adventurous crises in the North Atlantic.. The Princess Alice is the vessel now used by the Prince for his oceanographical researches. Especially is he identified with the pursuit and capture of the cetaceans. By the examination of the contents of the stomachy of these mare. mals, be has, snyen writer in the Graphic. established the existence in the intermediate depths of the ocean of a gigantic race of octopus of remarkable character. The more wa koow of marins biology, the Prlocs has written, and the more we learn from it of the links which compact the erastures spread over our planet, the mora do we seem to be justified in imagin. log that the sea may have bees the cradle of argenic life, when the casling of the atmosphere determined the precipitation of the waters.

Although we have nothing comparable to the new Oceanographical Museum at Mople Carte, A great deal of marine research, especially on the practical side, is being carried out in the British Isles. The Fishery Board for Scotland conducts a great variety of work at the Marina Laboratory and Hatchery, Bay of Nigg, Aber deen, and in the Firth of Clyde and Loch Fyne, the results of which appear in annual reports. Prominent, alan, are the investigations of the Fisheries branch of the Department of Agricul, fore and Technical Instruction, Ireland. The Marine Biological Associatico, founded in 1884.
