BOATSWAIN, AND LANP TRIMMER SENTENCED.
Before Mr. E. R. Hallifax this morning Ser. geant R. 9. Wills charged the boatswain and the lamp trimmer of the North German Lloyd steamship Chomrat with the theft of 68 lbs of lamp oil, valued at Sta! They were detected in the act of sending the stuff overboard into a waiting sampan by the chief officer of the ship shortly after midolght on the rgth of this mouth. The Police wore called, and Sergeant Wills arrested, the two-men. To-day, Mr. Hallifax sentenced them, both to one month's imprisonment - with hard labour, O! Jato there have been frequent farcen es, this kind in the Harbour and the penalties in this case should act as a deterrent. The lamp stolen is used generally for cocking "cho, and it may not be out of the way to tell our Gorman friends that a practice' which is favour- ed much by chief engineers on British ships in to pour a gallon or so of kétösine into the tank when the sweet oil is bring stored. This necessarily has to be done in the presence of some members of the crew, but it is an effect
check upon the theftuous appropriation of ships' stores that unfortunately is too common both at sax and in Hongkong Harbour. The presence of the kerosine, in the engine-room lamp olf does not greatly depreciate its useful Dess, but it makan ‘it impossible for the liquid to be tied as a cooking agent.
