CAUTION' WHEN APPROACHING BRITISH

PORTS,

The following Notice bas' been issued by the

· British Admiralty to vaurels approaching British -ports;" Lest^it may be regarded as of 10: alarmist nature, indicating expectation of su outbreak of hostilities, we'may say that a very | similar notice was published by the British Admiralty at the beginning of last year, and li, seems to be intended to republish the notification annually, in order that mariners may not be under any misapprobansion as to what should be done in "the" circumstances mentioned. The notification, which includes | Hongkong and Singapore, Adea, Bombay, Calcutta, Colombo, Karachi, Mauritius, Ran- goon, as well as the principal ports in the Colonies and the United Kingdom, runs as follows:

CAUTION WHEN APPROACHING BRITISH PORTS, (1) My Lords Commissioners of the Admiral. ty, having taken into consideration the fact that circumstances may arise in which it may be necessary, on account of periodical exercises, manauvres, or otherwise, in forbid all entrance to the Naval Ports" at night, this is to give Notice that on approaching the shores of Gient Britain, or any port of the British Empire,' if search lights are observed to be in constant oparation, the Naval Ports should be approach. ed with great cautiod, as it may be apprehend ed that obstructions may exist outside, or that the entrances' may be altogether cl ̧ end.

(2) If an entrance to a port is closed, three red vertical lights 'will be exhibited in some conspicuous positios, in or near to its ap. proich, and as far as possible notice of this fact will be given by lookout vessels in the offing,

In this case vessels must either proceed to the position marked "Examination. Anchorage" on the Admiralty charts and anchor there, or keep the sos.

Instructions have been given to avoid direct. Ramanai......... jog moveable lights towards vèssels under way, but mariners are warned that great cau. tion is necessary whed saurch lights are being exercised.

EXAMINATION SERVICE.

· (1)· Under certain circumstancos it may be. come accessary to take spocial measures to examine vessels dosising to enter the ports or localities in the United Kingdom and His Majesty's Posicious abroad, mentioned at the end of this Notice.

(3) In such case, vessats carrying the dis. tinguishing days or lights mentioned-lo para. graph (4) will be charged with the duty of examining ships which desire to enter the ports and of allolling pustius in which they shall anchor.

(3) As the institution of the Examination Service at any port will never be publicly ad-

vertised, especial care should be taken in ap proaching iks ports; by day or night, to keep a sharp. -look-out for any vessel carrying the above-mentioned flags or lights, and to be ready to bring to at once when bailed by her or warned by the firing of a gun.

(4) By day the distinguishing flags of the" Examination Steamer will be a special flig (white,and red horizontal surrounded by a bluc border) and a blue cosign.

Also, three räd vertical balls if the port is closed.

By night the steamer will carry :—

(a) Three red vertical lights if the port is

closed!

(b) Three whit. vertical lights if the part

is open.

The above lights will be carried in addition to the ordinary navigation lights, and will show an. unbroken light arou¿d the horiz30.

'(5) Masters are warned that, before attempt ing to enter any of these ports when the Ex- amination Service is in force, they must is

their own interests strictly obey all instructions

as to entry given to them by the Examination Steamer. In the absence of any instruction from the Examination steamer they must pio ceed to the position marked "Examination " on the Admiralty Charts and Anchorage anchor there,

(6). In case of fog, Masters of vessels are enjoined to use the utmost care, and the Examination Anchorage itself should be approached with caution,

(7) The pilots attached to the ports will be acquainted with the regulations to be followed.
