TRE RACES.
This afternoon at five o'clock, entries close for the Hongkong Jockey Club's Race Meeting. to be bold a mouth hence. Whilst it is too early yet to predict with any degree of certainty what the quality of the racing will be, it is, ad- mitted by our local exports that the prospects are good. So far the training has gone to show some excellent calibre, amongst the imported ponies, but still a month has to elapse before the Meeling comes on, in which time as many as twelve gallops may be taken, and certain ponies which are now considered sound goers may, as happened last year, become backward whilst the backward opes may work well into the front, However, after the entries are published local sporting men will be to a better position to Judge, though it will not be until within at 'least two weeks of the Race meeting that the most confident may build up any opinion worth the name on the form shown by the posies.

THIR ORQWIH AND DEVELOPMENT. [Specially Written for the "Hongkong Telegraph"
As the Colony has progressed of recent years, both as regards its population and its extent of commerce, one of the most notice. able features of its growth has necessarily
been the increase of housing which has had to be, provided for the extra workers attracted bera by the city's prosperity. This, of course, has created intense activity in the building trade from time to time: indeed, in some in- stances, this activity has been somewhat fever ish with the result that temporary set-backs have been experienced. Bui as was pointed out in the Telegraph recently the landed property market is at the present moment much more satisfactory than it was a year ago, whilst local experts and operators foretell a substantial advance in _jtu position in the near future.
Naturally associated with the builder's nut, and equally affected by the frequency with which his servicerare called upon, is the

THE HONGKONG UNIVERSITY. The interesting correspondence which re cantly passed between Sir Paul Chater and His Excellency on the subject of the Hongkong University must have been extremely gratifying to those who see in a University at Hongkong un increase of British prestige. The Colony is now in the happy position of being able to tell the world that the University is a fail accompli and the people have reasons to shake hands with themselves. The realization of a project which at one time seem- ed impossible of accomplishment and which almost bordered on the side of the grotesque owing to the Colony's papurious condition the uma the scheme was first given ex- pression to must be considered one of the most remkable achievements for which the citizens history of the University's birth will be writer ef Hongkong hive been responsible. SAW MILLS AT MONG-KOK-TSUI, Previously to the development of European steam-driven saw mills, all the timber brought into the Colony had to be sawn, by haud.. At their inception, the China Boraes Company's daw-milla were fitted out with modera appli fauces from Mesars, Jobo MacDowall & Co. Johnstone, Scotland, and from time to time these have been improved and brought up to date until now the mills are capable of denting with the 'beaviest timber imported.
The Chine Borneo Ca, it should be men tioned, has one very big mill in Sandakan, B.N.B., whence sawd timber, is exported to all parts. The Mongkok mill has been establish ed to meet local requirements and it well re- pays a visit. The huge logs of timber-some of them weighing as much as three tops-are brought ashore from the carrying steamers by junks and at high water are dumped on the foreshore of the yard. From the sbore extends a snooth shelving slip way, up" which the one- time leviathans of the Borace forests are drawn by means of a sten! hawser and winch and either taken direct to the saws or piled up in the yard until required. The care in question is.expected to last for weeks and the other actions on the records have been relegated into the unknown mysteries of the future. I believe there was some talk re- csatly of securing the services of a judge from Shanghai' at certain periods of the year but the local courts have not yet been graced with his much-needed presence. At no tinie was the need of more judges mora forcibly felt than now. Will they ever come ?
HRAPS OF SHAVINGS - coming from the machines: The mill yard has its awa jetty from which the finished planks are shipped on junks for their destination,
All the workers employed in the mill are Chi- nese-under Eurapean supervision, of course and Mr. H. W. The Company always keeps a good stock of hardwood logs in reserve to meet argent calls- and they also keep standing by them similarly a stock of sawn and seasoned planks so that they may be in a position' to meet the frequent inquiries made for such material.

Of course it remains to be said that no news paper article having reference to the local timber cutting.
