The total efflux is £616,703 during the week. Silver. The undertone of the marker, noi withstanding the advance of price well over #4d., has contioned good. There has been a substratom of speculative demand, and buying ordem have come from the Continent, India, and even China. It was not to be expected that 10 spirited an advance as that of the Isa! few days could have been effected wilboat as occasional cold douche; but the market is no 'absorbent just now, on account of frequent. "bear" coveling, that a sudden deluge of China sales, like that of yesterday, raiber con- solidated than overwhelmed the market. The fact is, there are many " b⋅ll" points about ge the present time.

The "bear" covering and coinage orders naturally take silver definitely from the visible stock, There is a certain optimistic feeling in America, which, though prompied, in the first icstance by the reported repper combine, which too much importance my possibly have been attached, bas happened on a most oppor tude moment to manifest itself. Lastly, the
prospects of silver in the Near and Far East teem favourable for the following reasons. The silver currency reserves in India record a drop "of neatly it crores in the fortnight ending De
cember 10, and the high price of cotton still retards imports into China,
Silver has ever beón a fickle market; but certainly at the present time circumstances point rather strongly to the conclusion that the, higher level has some justification.
