According to a private message from Mayo. bashi the volcano had been unusually active. since last month and was beard to rumble occasionally, the sound being heard in the neighbouring districts and even at Mayebashi and at other adjacent places. To this must be traced the origin of the strange sound, like the
roar of cannon which has been heard in Tokio for a few weeks past, crusing some, uneasiness among Tokio citizens.
According to tha, repurt - of 'the Mayebasti Observatory a rather heavy eruption took place about 7.47 pm Tuesday evening, and houses shook in Mayobashi and Takasaki. Great unesti- ness prevails among the local inhabitants, As the night advanced anbes fell in great quantity in Western Gumma. The whole sky over the mountain district was seen ablaze with burning reddish fames, presenting a grand sight. No disturbance was, however, recorded by the seismograph at the Tokio Central Observatory, so that people in Tokio may rest assured that they need not be fearful of any earthquake occurring in Tokio as the result of the eruption. Still the eruption may, according to the observation of the observatory experie, assume still granter violence coasider- ing the circumstances reported from various
sources.
A telephone message from Komoro, Shinano province, the nearest town to the valcano, states that a great aruption of Asama accom panied by a tremendous thundering-acise-took- place about 7.30 of Tuesday evening.
