The China and Japan receipts have not been equal to those of last year, but this is partly owing to fewer voyages being actually run during the latter period. The movement of specic has been below the low figure of last year, and would alone account for a consider able decline in the ordinary revenue. Necessari.

Io China there is an awkward and in fact almost impossible opposition to contend with, in the Siberian Railway which is now working with considerable regularity. It is to be hoped that this great highway will induce an increase in the number of travellers, who arriving by one route will desire to return by another, This seems a not improbable outlook in the future.
The expenditure for the year shows an in- crease of upwards of '£80,000, which is chiefly due to the increased size and the more costly character of the ships now employed in the mail, service, and to the higher speed at which the steamers have to be driven in order to fulfil the conditions of the contract.
