THE GOVERNMENT REPORT. Is the month of june Mr. Irving made his Annual examination and reported is follows:
Staff-Brother Christino, 11 assistant mas- tars, and 2 Chinese assistant teachers.
Discipline, -Very good. Organization. The large number of Chipre in the lower standards constitutes & blot on the otherwise excellent organization of the school. They do not have to pass on entrance examination in Chinese, and the time given to the subject being only three-quanièrs of an hour a day, it is impossible, for them to acquire any real proficiency. They seldom remain at the school above Standard 111, and thus are not a real strength to it except by swelling the grant.
Sacitation. Very satisfactory, Apparaids.—Very satisfactory,
:
Floor Space.--Sufficient for 512 pupils. English Subjects-English composition in very good in the higher standard's. In the lower standards there is very little to criticise in the treatment of thesa subjects
„Geography-is'not taught very interestingly In Standard IV, Time is wasted over definitions that seem too vaibose to be really intelligible to childran, but which are y.1 not scientifically accurate.
Handwriting is good, though I do not care for the large upright ban 1 of the copy books.
Reading-The Chinese master in one of the divisioon of Class 1 in taking the reading speaks much 100 fast and clips his words badly, Mathematica. The teaching of geometry is very much improved as compared with what it was a few years ago. It is now taught in a very practical way. Papers not in algebra and arithmetic were very well answered by the highest standards.
His Excellency the Governor delivered short address and then distributed the prizem,. PRIZE LIST.
The prize list was as follows :-
