OPIUM IN YUNNAN,
BURNING OF THE drug at the caPITAL.
The execution ground at Yuquanfu, a few days ago, was the scene of a remarkably daring proceeding by the official, in the campaign for the total suppression of opium in the province, writes a correspondent in the W. C. D. News.
No less than 20,040 ounces of prepared opium were publicly destroyed by fire, in the presence of an enormous crowd of people. The officials of the city were present in person, and the event was looked upon as the greatest public de monstration of the kind that the people had seen. The utmost stringency is being observed, and smokers are being harshly dealt with but there is yet much to be dose. Yusranfu a few years ago, was one of the greatest opium centres of the empire, and it is questionable whether the illicit trade will ever be eradicated, even with all the precaptives takeo to bring about
that end.

They could have made no better selection, and it is to be hoped that those among the Chinese who will act as hosts will ensure that nothing in wanting in their hospitality to make the stay of these delegates as agreeable and as instructive as possible. It would also be a tactful recog. nition of the new order of things in China, if the Executive of the Settlement were to sasure this soforthal national parliament, the first of its kind, of its interest and sympathy, while taking steps to give practical expression to such sentiments. The delegates will be gathered. from distant provinces, and it is probable that to many Shanghai will be a city of wonders; their position ensure for them intelligence and influence above their fellows, and there

They are contracting at high prices, though making it appear that they ore purchasing on low terms. If the fact that the companies are holding only a small stock of raw cotton becomes generally kaowa, and the companies are compelled to purchase in any circumstances, the price of raw cotton in Japan will go up above that prevailing in America aud·lódia, and the present situation of the spinning companies will be reversed," their working again becoming unremunerative.
