giving up the race when he reached the red tape. From this stage onwards ho was keenly watching and directing bir men, evidently placing amply justified confidence in McCabe to carry the blue riband for the Nortberem.

All started off well. MacCabe, D. H. Cooke, and Pereira took the lead, with the rat all in a booch behind. MacCabe, of Shinghal, kept on increasing his lead length by lengthy to the third length many dropped behind and MacCabe was in front with Rose second and C.). Cooks and Robinson together following. This. position was maintained till the sixth length, and soon C. J. Cooke came lord with Rose, with Robinson close bebind. After this there was no doubt as to the'isane of ide race.

This is the first year that au interport swim ming contest has taken place in the Colony and the enthusiasm which the meeting evinced fully justified the fixturs which, it may be hoped, will be made na nnañal event,

The most interesting events of the day ware the reo yards luterport Championship, the hon- ours of which went to Hongkong frstand second places, and the Half-mile Interport Champion ship which was won after a splendid recp. by R. W. MacCabe of Shanghai, C. 1. Cooke (Hongkong), being second. The handicap events of the Club were very good throughout, all the finixbor being excellent. The only evast of the day which could not be decided by the judges is the High Dive, the merits of which were considered by Mr. G. A. Caldwell (dongkang) and Mr. P. Fowler (Shanghai), The point of variance between the respec tive judges was the application of the rules. It was contended by the Shanghai Captain that the National Association rules should prevail, while the Hongkong judge held that local con- ditious should apply. According to the former contention D. H. Cooke (Shanghai) should fe ceive the award; and by the application of the latter standard the verdict should unquestion. ably go in M. A. `R. Sourd's favour. As the judges could not reach a decision, It was refer-. red to the Committee, of whom a meeting will be held to arrive at a satisfactory award.

The officials wote President His Excel lency Sir Frederick Logard, K.C.M.G.`.C.B. D.5.0.; Uhairman: Mr. A. Rodger; Hoo. Tips surer: Mr. C. 'D. Silas; Hon. All started off well Hum- phreys having a 'slight, lend from the others and when they were on the second length it could be seen that Humphrays.would carry the honours. At the third length Humphreys bad a good lead, and the other three struggled hard to get close, but their efforts proved unavailing. Humphreys won with a comfortable margin the fight for the second place was an exciting one, MacCabe, Prince, and Claxton going at it, and resulted in a win for Claxton by a strong touch.
