"Peking, 29th August. The Central Government has tele graphed to all the Provinces asking for the recommendation of suitable candidates for the Army and Navy.

AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT,

When the proceedings started Mr. Atabas ter informed the Court and jury that with regard to the third prisoner (Leung, So) the Crown could not offer any evidence against him. The jury, having agreed, the prisoner was discharged. Mr. Alabaster theo'addressed the jury. He said that the law was quite simple and the facts of the case not difficult. One of the witnesses for the prosecution would laform the jury, he said, that about'eight o'clock on the night of the 29th July her sampan was moored off the Wing Lok Street wharf. A man, whose nickname was "Lut Nga Chai," engaged the simpan, and in consequence of what she was told, she rowed the boat to
