HEROIC RESCUES IN V RIBD SCENES.'

The Morning Leader of 10th July says ; - Some memorable.dieds of gallantry in life, 'siving ward Tawarded yesterday at Mariborough House by the Prince of Wales, in connection with the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, of which the Prince is "grand, peior."

Seventeen bronze medals were awarded, and the Prince banded them over without a set speech, bui with a shake of the hands and a few informal words so each recipient.

Here is a brief narrative of some of the acta of gallantry :

Alfred and Robart Hoot, brothers, wate em. ployed at Alexandra Potteries, Tusstall, in August last, Robert fall into a 19fi, task of boiling oil and water, and Alfred jumped in to his rescue. With the aid of a pipe he got him out. Their screams of agony as they rolled about on the ground attracted attention, and the brothers were removed to hospital. Robert died, and Alfred yesterday received the bronze medal for his brave but fruitless attempt at

rescue.

A man named George, Jackson was overcome by fumes in a baft at Southampton last May.. The four men went down over and over again at great per sopal peril. Unhappily, their brava effort did not result in saving the man's life. Each was given the bronze medal

He nearly lost his own life, and was rescued exhausted and unconscious.

James Weeks, a G.W.R. sigaalman, saved the lives of two children at St. David's station, Excler. By a very narrow margin he got ibem from in front of an express train.

George Bailey, a railway clerk, similarly saved a lady at Shepherdewall near Dover, last May, only just in time,

Enrique Aubrey Hodge (Jamaica) is to get the certificate and Vaughan Miller (Tasmania)" the silver medal for plucky deeds. Hodge did good service during the Kingston earthquake, and Milter showed splendid bravery in attempts to rescue shipwrecked sailors.

PLUCKY MINERS.

The silver medals have already been award- ed to three men in Somersetshira-for- ̄acts-of- bravery performed at the Norton Hill Colliery, near Bath, in April of last year. The Prince, on the occasion of his recent visit to Longleat, presented the medals to Herbert Attwood (under manager) and John Simms and William Gould (miner). They made most hernic, but unsuccessful attempts to save ten men who perished in an explosion. W
