*1909 Miss Adela Llorente.!! The second part of the programme opened with a piano selection by Misses E. Figueiredo, L. Comar, L. Wilkinson and M. Gomes. The quartette was cleverly executed. Miss Jean Brago's declamation of The Little Lion Charmer" was given with much expression "The Four Seasons of Life" was a happy combination of recitations, songs, pole, scarf and fancy drills which was enjoyed as much by the forty odd girls taking part in it as by the large audience. The "staging" of their drill adapted from the kindergarten system was carri- ed out with pretty affect and elicited praise on every hand. The programme was brought to close by the singing of "God Save the King" by over a hundred litle boys and girls on the stage.

In addition to the ordinary subjects prescribed by the Code, such extra subjects as music, drawing and palating are also taught in the school while the French and German languages as well as type writing have been added in compliance with the demand which has arisen for such additional subjects. Une hundred and ten pupils at tooded the music classes; twenty-five drawing and painting; and two French Private lessons in the English language have also been given outside school hours. Without entering intodetails on the report ofthelospector of Schools, whose criticisms have been directed mainly towards what be has termed the "En glisk work" of the School, it is permissible to abserve that the greater majority of the chil dran attending the Convent School are children of Portuguese and of Chinese parentage whose caly opportunity of bearing and conversing in the English language at school. The 'acquisition af idiomatic English by such chil- dron is, therefore, a matter of great difficulty. If they have not come up to the standard ex pected by the Inspector it is a reasonable hope that due allowance be made to the national character of the home environs which, in other respects, leave nothing to be desired. A rule of the school is"that, at work as in play, the English language, and that lout, be the medium of instruction. That the measure of success allained by the school ju they t is en- couraging, is testified to by the fact that some of the past pupils are engaged in teaching at priot Portogal and China, two countries which are vate and public schools in such important cea tres like Hongkong, Manila and Hankow in Nont China-All tho schools wherent firmer Convent pupils are now condutting classes are sun under the auspices of the Government of the respective places. In the past, children of the Convent have not entered the annual pub lic schools sports; a new departure is contem plated in this respect by the Superioress and it is, hoped that our scholars will compele in friendly rivalry at the Happy Valley acxt Marchi The health of the children during the year under review has been very satisfactory. Whet presenting the prizes in October, 1907, H. E. the Governor spoke of the great interest, which he felt in the industrial section of the school in which "the orphan'irls are taught a means of livelihood which may be useful to them here- after and by which they may be able to help a little forward, and contribute towards the main. tenance of the school in which they are being cared for." li is my very pleasant duty to ob serve, at the request of the Superioress, that the value of self-help and self-reliance in culcated upon the children by His Excellency, bas stimulated the girls to greater efforts in their desire to help the Convent with the
