Singapore. The shipping trade between China goes, with the result that they have not, asʻfor merly, carried much coal to Hongkong and and Japan and those places has conse.! quently been benefitted largely. The fiaight- age on coal consigned to home ports has also risen, causing a tendency to rise also on the part of the rads on cargo in general. In other respects, however, there has been little joprove ment. In regard to the domenic services, ow- log in the favourable rice harvest of last year, there were increases in both the passcogers and cargo carried, but, unfortunately, "there was severe competition in the Inland Sea and the Kii direction, so that a reduction of the freight charges became inevitable. Consequently the profits from these services were less than in the corresponding period of last year, although they were somewhat greater than in the last half. A fair profit was secured from the lines going to or touching at the Louchoos, Keelung (For mosa), the San-in district, Shimonoseki, Kago shima, Kochi, Tokushima, and Atsura. The result of the services betwaso Osaka and the Loochoos and Oshima, was very good, this being attributable to an increase in the cargoes of sugar since April owing to the lowering of the tax. The Kaisha had to put extra vessels on that line and the profits were about double those previously obtained.

A specimen of the king of beasis in the Zoo at the Osaka Museum has become the iono cent victim of a brutal sightseer, who attacked
the animal with a sword on the yib' instant. The man entered the Osaka Museum at Ham maćhi-bashi, Osaka, without a ticket, and was stopped by a ticket collector. The man stared Insolently in the face of the ticket collector for a moment, but finally bought the ticket and.
made his way inside. After making a round of the various exbibits be arrived at the menagerie and stopped in front of the lion's cage. The weather being cloudy, threatening rain, there were no other visitors, and the lion was quietly sleeping. The man, looked at the animal for moment and shouting at the top of his voice "no biayaro ("Damn fool"), raised bis sword stick as though to strike the hop. The lion thereupon awoke and ou seeing iba man' standing outside the cage threstening to attack him, rose up and roared. On this the man shook his sword-stick again. This infuriated the animal, which. roared still louder, and extending its paw attempted to grasp the sword-stick. In the

In consequence of the dulness of Japan' ways, the service on the wastern coast of Cores produced rather unfavourable results, but the steamers playing on the North-eastern coast did fairly well with both passengers and cargo, The steamers going to Tairea did not get much cargo on the outward voyage, but secured
good harvest of beans in Manchuria. As, bow-
ever, the freight charges have been very low, the profit was not great,
Owing to the long continued business depres sion in North China, the steamers on the Tien- sin fine did not find much cargo, with the result that the business on that service was very poor.
As the fall of silver-and the Chinese, boycott of Japanese steamers has not yet come to an end, both the quantity of cargo and the number of passengers on the South Chios service were small. The advent of the tea export season has benefited the steamers to some extent, but the profits were not greater than in the correspond- ing period of last year.
With regard in the services in the Japan Sea, the steamers rubbing between Tsuruga and Vladivostock wore much affected by the aboli- tion of the Free Port system at the latter port, but the worst was over by the end of April. The export of anions and some other vegetables commenced at the beginning of May, while the number of passengers did not decrease during the term, with the result that the profits realised were not less than at the end of the correspond- ing period of last year. Owing, however, to the bad fruit harvest in the Hokkaido, the result of the coastal service to Vladivostock was not so favourable as in the corresponding period of 1908,
