AMỤNG THE PIGMIBS

RETURN OF HUNTER WHO MET MH. ROOSEVELT,

Col. J. J. Harrison has reached England on the conclusion of a six months' expedition to the Congo and Ituri forest: the principal abjects of which were hunting and collecting. Travelling by way of Mombasa and the Uganda Rollway, Col. Harrison finally collect. ed bls caravan of 50 porters at Entebbe, the capital of Uganda, Reuter is informed.. From that placa-he started on a long match of co miles to Toro, whence he crossed Jato Belgian territory. He was greatly struck by the progress that is being tande in Uganda, where the Governor is construct

to miles long has been completed, and on ing some very fine motor roads, One road

this rups a regular weekly service of passenger and baggage motors. By the automs it is hoped that these roads will be completed from the capital through to Toro and other main stations.

After crossing the Semliki the party explored the neighbouring slopes in search of gorilla, but ware unable to find any. The Belgians are described as displaying graât activity in this part of the Congo Free Stato. They are im proving their stations and opening up new customs depots.

SUSPICIOUS NATIVES, The natives in the vicinity of the boundary were very hostile. These people-the Wa lendi-are the tribes with whom the recent Boundary Commission had considerable trouble. When Cal. Harrison entered their country he found that they had deserted their.villages and had all retired to the bills.

་་

Every rock and eminence was lined by these people, who were fally armed and, to the num berofsoma thousands, squattedlike rows ofmon keys on the hill sides watching the white man's party. Every effort was made to get loto touch with them, and it was only by leaving heaps of salt and presente in the middle of the deserted villages that the natives, fading these gifts as they suspiciously tracked the explorers, became convinced of the friendliness of the strangers, and eventual y'abandoned their hostile attitude

Col. Harrison then entered the forest, and no lood being available to carry 13 days' ratione and cut his way through the tropical growth.
