CHINESE SCHOOL IN SAN FRANCISCO:
DIRECTORS RESIGN IN 'A' BODY,
The troubles which have threatened to dis- rupt the native Chinese school, which' wAT established three months ago with impressive ceremonies by Imperial School Commissioner Liang Ching Quai came to a head yesterday with the announcement that the board of dir. actors, consisting of twenty-two of the leading merchants of Chinatown, had resigned their positions in a body, reports the San Franceses Chronicle 13th ult.
When the school was established by the Commissioner, who was sent here for the pur pose by the Imperial Board of Education of
· Peking,.it..was announced that it was not in tended to supersede the American schools/ip which the younger residents of Chinatown get their schooling, but was for the purpose of giving the Chinese children the knowledge of their native language and the teachings of their scholars and philosophers such as they could not obtain in the Caucasian institutions,
A board of directors was selected, consisting of four members of the Oriental colony, of which Tin Eli, president of the Canton Bank, was appointed president, The commissioner nonounced that Consul-General Sho Ping Tsun, as representative of the Imperial Government, would have control of the school, in which be would be assisted by the board of directors. ft was also stated that one teacher was to be

The commissioner had bardly left for China before trouble started. The board of directors was added to until it consisted of twenty-two men, and as they all bad different theories as to FROM LEITH, ANTWERP, MIDDLES- how the school should be conducted there was isid to be little harmony. Then the number of scholars dwindled until now there are only Ito popils, with four teachers. Some of the directors felt that the Chinese children should be taken from the American schools altogether, while others advocaled lengthening the hours of study in the Chinese school.
A meeting was held last night by the direc tors of the Six Companies and the matter was thoroughly discussed. It was finally decided
to let matters remain as they are until the sum. mer vacation during which time a decision will be reached.
This will give time for both sides to com. municate with the Board of Education in Pek: ing and the question of who is to have contro of the school will be decided there. In the. meantime the Consul General will have cos. trol of the school, but he will in a measure be subject to the wishes of the Six Companies.'
