An extraordinary occurrence is reported from the Hokkaido by a vernaculer paper. On the 19th ultime, says the report," a youth pamed Matsunta Tokujiro, aged 19, employed by a merchant in Tokachi province, in the Hokkal do went into the wood on the instruction a his master to cut timber. According to custom in a district beset by wild animals in the shape of beats and eagles, the youth carried a quo fot. self-protection. He bad juil entered the wood when a shadow suddenly appsared abwe is head, and ou glancing up he saw an eagle which was apparently about to attack him, Without hesitation he raised his gun and fired, hitting the bird, which fell heavily to the ground. Under the impression that the eagle was dead the youth ran up to store it, when suddenly the gigantic bird rose up and made a dash for the youth. Unable to evade the attack and having no time to aim, be used the butt end of his sifje in prosecilag himself. While doing so the trigger caught in his clothes and the weapon went off, the charge entering the abdomen, and he fell mortally wounded. The report of the gun attracted the attention of the. lad's master, who lost no time in proceeding to the spot. The youth was carried home, but succombed shortly after. What became of the eagla is not mentioned in the report.
