The Isthmus, though a comparatively order. ly place, is orderly only with the protection of an efficient police. The monthly list of arreste Busually gets up to goo, and the fdes of disorder is increased by the fact that from 30 to 50 of the prisoners are women.

"Of the 6,100 gold employes on the Isthmus only 20s are women. The lethmias canal com. mission employs 187 women and the Panama rallroad 18. The average salary paid to the women employaris $73.90, The highest salary. paid any woman on the Isthmus is $175 a month, and the lowest 525 a month.

There are approximately on the Isthmus in the employ of the commission and Panama rallroad 44,0:0 persons, of whòm 'about 6,coo are Americans., The normal warking force each day is shown, from the rolls of July 1st, when there were actually at work 30,541 employez- 25,388 men for, the commission and 5,153 for the railroad.

The government of the Isthmus has also rate laundry and a drying house at avery work- gone into the washing business, with an elabo ing camp. The drying houses, however, have
