place from the steamer Sui A last Thursday afternoon. The tragedy was witnessed by a number of passengers.
The Sui du, belonging to the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Heamboat Company, Limited, left Macao for longkong at two Half an hour later, when the ship o'clock. had just passed the lighthouse, the cry of "Mao Overboard" was heard. Looking over the side Captain Vincent saw a Chinaman struggling in the water.
A lifebuoy was thrown to him, but he made no attempt to grasp it. The ship was stopped; and a boat lowered, in charge of a number of men, who towed with all their might to save the drowning, man, but their efforts were an. availing The Chiosman came to the surface a secpad time, but the third time; when the rescuing party was close at hand, he rose no more. The boat remained on the scene for several minutes afterwards, but as there was no sign of the man, the party returned to the ship and the Sui An continued her fourney.
The Chinaman, who is unknown, went aboard the Sui An' a few minutes before she sailed. There was nothing about him that would lead any of his lollow-passingers to suspect anything. At about half-past two he was soon to rise from his, seat, walk to the stern, and jump overboard,

In the Marine Court, this morning, before the Hon. Commander Basil R, H. Taylor, RN, Harbour Master, Police-Sergeant George Jackson charged Wong Ki, master of a licensed fighter, with unlawfully lying alongside the stone wharf at Observation, Place on the 19th last, in such a manter as to prevent the access of other vessels.
On the 19th inst., at 345 p.m., defendant made fast his lighter to the west side of- “the„whaif“at Observation Place, thus blocking Prosecutor asked that side of the wharf, defendant what he was doing there and the latter answered that he was waiting for some. one ashore.
