IT is reparted from Peking that the Ministry of War has telegraphed to the Chinese Minister in Paris asking him to contract with French shipbuilders on behalf of the Chinese Govern- meat for the construction of fourteen gupboats. THE German Emperor has conferred upor Mr. C. Stepharias, of the firm of Buchmeister Glenogle and Co., the fourth class of the Order of the Suisang Red Eagle, in acknowledgment of the great services which Mr. Stopbarius has rendered to Garman interests in Shanghai during recent Hopsang years. Mr. Stepharius has been for some years Tak Hing. president of the German Club Concordia, the Keongwai new premises of which were built during his form of office. He was one of the fauadors of the Deutscher Konzert Verein and has been chairman of its committes ever sinca, except during one year spent on furlough in Europe. For many years also Mr. Stepharius has bylang- ed, and still belongs, to the committeer of the German Church, German Association, German A. D. C., etc.; is fact his name is connected With nearly every undertaking of our German fellow-residents in Shanghal.
