NARROW ESCAPE FROM DETECTION, Precautions were here redoubled, as the en campments were constantly watched by Thibet. aps, who were always spying. Dr. Sven Hedio, dressed as a sheep "driver, evaded suspicion, but his position became suddenly critical as a rich old merchant from Lhassa, who controls the whole of the wool trade, grew suspicious and sent word to the Governor, Dr. Sven Heilin was nearly detected making barometric observations, but he saved himself by rusoiog towards the bills, pretending to search for a strayed caravan of animals. The Governor failed to appear, and the march was diverted to the mountainous conpiry.

He then turned westward and visited the Mending temple, situated on the bank of the Somathangpe, the largest river in Thibet, with- pa outlet to the ocean. He failed to meet the malo body of the caravan, but travelled in1 -Thibefan dres, quite unmolested, by a route- west-south-west, Crossing a range; 20,000-feet high, he reached Kbala, shown on the maps as a great peak, but really a pass in a high range ruening from the main system. He then came to Ghalaringtso, which is described in the Company's Offco, ALEXANDRA BUILDINGS HAVE just received a Fresh Assortment

GEOGRAPHICAL RESULTS. Geographically the iwo explorations are_of the highest value. The bland space north and south of the inland lake region has been tra versed and the mystery of Boogba has been solved. Bongba, though one of the greatest provinces of Thibet, has never before been visted by Europeans. The new map of Thibet will be of goo sheets, which proves the: extent of the exploration. All the heights of the passes, the river crossings, and the encamp. ments are recorded; a hundred, astronomical points have been fixed; several thousand panoramas have been taken, with compass bearings and names. Dr. Sven Hedio has brought back photographs, pencil drawings, and water colours, Meteorological observa tibns were made three times daily, and the ex- plorer has geological specimens, with the dip H.M, KING Edward vii,"and) Dr. Sven Hedio then discovered ·Laks and fall of the rocks, from 1,2:0 different points Chuaitso, following the west shore for a whole | The total length of his jjurneys. was 4,000 day.
