It will come as a surprise to most people" perhaps, that there are a number of British steamers which always sail with heavy betting The belting, is in the form of P.PL insurances. That form of marine insurance policy was lucidly explained in yesterday's... · Morning Leader. The letters. actually mean that the insured, when he makes a claim on the underwriter of the' policy, will got have to prove that bé, had any insurable interest in the vessel. For instance, a steamer is last. A number of people, who have' no in- surable interest whitever in the vessel, are found to be much the richer for her loss. 'Ope man, who admitted he knew nothing of ships or shipping, won £6,000. Another was holder of a P.P.1. policy on her for £3,000, Others claimed, ou similar policies, over £6,000.

Recently there was the sensational inquiry: into the loss of the Albion. In the case of that ship the Board of Trade requested Lloyd's to poi a notice inviting undergriters of . P. P. 1. policies on that vassel to volunteer information. This the underwriters did, and it came out that persons with no interest whatever in the vessel (except their bit that she would be last) were Tricker by Li1,000. The bats varied from ins |to £3,400. A counsel at this inquiry amused, the Court by explaining that "Kit, was perfectly clear that a large portion ofthe population of Card., when tired of the ordinary business proceeded 10 the docks, and there, as if in 'n, paddock, viewed various ships, and, having made their selection, backed them with on insurance company."
