WUCHOW IN 1907

"MR, CONSUL KING'S REPÓRT. ~The total net yaide of the trade of Wuchow for the year 1907, as shown by the returns of

the Imperial Maritime Customs, amounted to Hk. Tis. 9,663.395, equivalent to £1,579,301 as compared with Hk. Tiz, 10,554,816, or "£4,737 -147, in 1996, a.diffstence of 71, 891,121 or 4166,846, in favour of 196. Foreign imports from Hongkong show a decrease from the figures for 19:6.of T14, 462,334, or £75,113, of course, included onder this heading. The trade of Wuchów for the year 1957, jakeo as a whole, may be regarded as having beed some-

matter for regret, as British manufactures-are,

what unsatisfactory and desppointing. The

very small stocks remaining in the bands of many dealers at the close of 1936, together with the opening of Nancing to foreigo trade, gave rise to sanguine expectations as regards the import trade for 1907, but these expectations were not destined to be realised. Despite restrictions which have rendered the opening of Nanning unsatisfactory, one would have. thought that the opening of such a well-known distributing centre would, in itsall, have led to a considerable, increase in trade.

CAUSES OF DECREASE OF TRADE, The principal cause of the shrinkage of the trade is gay ay be attributed to the refusal of the Faishap backers, the chief financiers of the trade of this province, to make such free 'advances to merchants as in former years. Since the latter part of 1935, when the trade in native opium began to fall off at Nanning, it has not been possible to arrange so advantage ously for rèm ttances from that city to Hang- kong or Fatshap. The` opium deglars were

in a position to egotiste bills of very large amounts payable in Hoogkong or Fatshion, and the is of this facility in somitting is a matter for consideration in its bearing on the

-piece goods and yara trade,
