Messrs. Lamke and Rogge write in their and Hainan, same as No. 5. fortnightly circular of cath inst. –

The freight market during the past fortnight' has again presented a very miserable attitude, particularly in the matter of rates. The "ray

Pal sunabine." that recently appeared-in-the- shape of a stronger demand from Saigon to Hongkong, has had a very short-lived existence and the present state of affairs is about as bed is it well can be with no prospects of any alleviation in the near future. In view of this situation it is quite on the cards that the next Tow weeks will see an additional number of > vessels laid up in Hongkong and other consi

poris!

#

Saigon/Hungkeng business is confined to two

charters of steamers, which are on that run regularly, at 13 cents per pical. For prompe loading there is no demand at time of writing," but for later dates there in some slight inquiry at 13 cents.

"

Saigon/Philippine rafes have experienced a further fall, two Boats being reported fixed at 21 and 10 cents respectively.

From Saigon to other quarters no charters appear to have been effected."

Bangkok has a fixture on berth terms, ie, -25/18 cents less usual rebates to shippers, 10 Hongkong of a 34/36,000 pičuls boat. There were indications that some moté tonnage might be wasted, but a weaker rice market Incally has put a stop to farther operations,

Java-The fact of the sugar crop in Cuba being a failure has made it compulsory for dealers in the United States to contract for -largs imports from Java, and these shipments are said to be on such a gigantic scale, that ex: ports to other quarters such as China and Japan are, during the 198 sesson, bound to be in- haiteximpt as compared with former years,

From Newchwang to Canton three C.N. Co,'Ps'eamers have been settled for part car. goes on bails of ao cents per picul; in
