"Among a number of similar costs, he ** writes, "the most instructive record of these

ancient forent fires was observed in a tres of moderate sise-about fifteen feet in diameter about five feet from the ground. It was 270 feet in height, and 2,171 years old,':.

"The history of the tice was as follows: C. 171 it began its existence. The first year of the Christian dra it was about four lest in diameter about the base. A. D. 245, at 516 years of age, a burning three feet wide occur. fed on the trunk. One hundred and five years

·ware, occupied in covering this wound with new tiene." For 1,196 years no further injuries were registered. A. D. 1441, at 1,712 years: of age, the tres was bored a second time in two long grooves, ong and two feet wide"re spectively. Each had its own system of repair *Doe bundred and thiny-nine years of ** growth followed, iscluding the time of covering the wounds. A. D. 1580, at 1,851 years of age, occurred acother fire, causlog a barn on the trunk two feet wide, which look fifty-six years to cover with new tlusoe. Two hundred and seventeen years of growth followed this burn, A. D, 1797, when the tree was 2008 years old, a tremendous fire attacked it, bura ing a great scar eighteen feet wide. One hundred and three years enabled the three to reduce the exposed area' of the barn to about "fourteen feet in width,"

Recently it was found that a great tree which had been felled for commercial purposes had begun its existence 525 years before Christ. The age, if not the fame, of the cedars of Lebanon attaches to those'trees of California.

They are worth a few dollars when cut up into alapboards. Their value is priceless if left standing, but you can't make a lumberman see it that way,—E. D. Clark in the Chicago Peil.
