It seem obvious that the Chinese will not be able to either raise the requisits fuads or to provide the ex- pert knowledge to construct the great Canion- ankew trunk line. When the Hongkong Government loaded the money requisite to hay out, the original. American and other voo cession tires of this line, one of the terms was that if the Chiness desired, or required, foreign capital or assistance that appeal would be made to British capitalists. It is obvious to all, who have bren, watching events and doings on that line that sooner or later this appeal will have to be made. Another less defipite pro mise has been made for financing and can struct ing the Bankow-Ichang line, which, we may anticipate, will also be made in due course. It will be evident to all who have been watching the Chinese railway question that China has not yet arrived at the stage, despite enthusiasm and newly-awakened patriotism, when she can either undertake the finance or constraction of the lines she requires in the country.
