JAPANESE COTTUN SFINNING
SURVEY OF THE CHINA TRADE.
The Tokyo Asaks reverts to discussion of the cotton spinning industry and the future of the yarn trade in China. The price of Japanese yara' is largely regulated according to the prospects of its China trade, and Japan's most formidable competitors in the China market are indian and Chinese yarns. The restriction of production by the Japanese sp'oners will not only reduce the supply in China but the shortage will have to be supplied by Indian and Shanghai yarn, Nor will it result in an increases the price of Japanese yard quantity and value of Japastas yarn exported to China during the last five years will be seen from the following figures

As shown above, the export of yarn has greatly decreased during the five years under review,
not because of the diminution of the demand in China, but for other reasons. The following figures, showing the amount of Indian yare imported to China of late years, speak for themselves :—

‚A`STEAM TRÄVLER DURNT. apanese rapers have been devoting much spice to a strange affair at Choshi. From a lengthy banslation in the Japan Times we learn that on the 17th May 6 fi hermen ranging from 20-10, 25 years in age are to be publicly tried in the Chiba' Local Court on a charge of incendiarijm, they having set fire to the steam tray or Kaiko Maru and burat a part of the opper deck and the large fishing net. It ap pears that along the seashore of Choski for about ten if there stretches a fishing village. wiere about 3:400 fishermen live. The present prosperity of Choshi is principally owing to the long-standing fishing enterprise of the village, but to the fishermen's surprise in November last a modern steamer equipped with up-to-date fittings appeared" off the Choshi shore and commenced fishing there, employing tha lost English trawling system, under which large bet is set Tiroff in the offing and drawo be steamer, so that great numbers of hare caught The quantity caught by the

As will be seen from the ab ve, India is sup plying to China three times as much yarn at comes from Japan, and there is a tendency towards a yearly increase in fadia's supply Besider, the manufacture nl calion yarn in China has been making much progess in recent years. The fate of this progress may be gathered from the fact that the out-turn in China, which only amounted to 170,00 bales prior to the Russo-Japanses wat, had increased to 330,000 bales in 1907. The reason for the decline of the export of Japanese yarn must be attributed to the neglect of exporters during the late war owing to the suddenly increased domestic demands. Now thatthe requirements of the home market have been suisfied behoves the cotton spingers to exert themselves to recover their fost ground in China, vf
