THE PEKING FIRKS;
Waiting on the 18th.n't, the Peking corras.. pandent of the N. C. D. Neidi says; in view. of the somewhat startling statements circalated with regard to the outbreak of fires in Paking, almour the first question put by a visitor to the

ject. As so frequently happens, calm consider- Ation of the incidents leads to less sensational ideas than thoìo which 'found too easy expres- sion in the columns of the Tientsin Prest
Is trus that a series of fires in rapid succession. brought the average of these outbreaks far above the Dormal figure even at this season of the year; moreover, there can be no doubt that the Chinese authorities became alarmed, that * special investigation into the causes of these fires has been lostituted and that a reward har bean offered for information leading to the at rest of any culprit. Some arrests have already been made, but the results of the official in quiry are not yet known. Meanwhils an ex- planation can be offered with some degres of certainty, which tends to throw light upon some of these episodes. Whatever may prove to have been the origin of the fire that destroyed the Industrial Exhibition, it is more than probable that the result of that confiagration draw attention in the public minds to the passibilities of fire insurance as a profitable in- vestment. How many of the succeeding fires. are attributable to arson for the purpose of defrauding insurance companies will, perhaps, never be known, Olber explanations are forh coming for two out of the twelve. In the case of the Lama Temple it is more than probable that the fire had very close connection with "he disappearance of some of the treasures stored there. Many objcis d'art of Imperial antecedents find their way into the market that
cannot cast the blame for their passage from hand to hand upon the doings of 1900. The custody kept upon a large, number of the Imperial store-bouses is exceedingly lax, and it requires but little of the ingenuity of which the Chinese are capable to explain the loss of some of their contents by such a fire as that which recently broke out in the Lama Temple. A more elaborale explanation of another fire is given in the story told of a Peking resident who received information that he was going to be arrested on the charge' of having be trayed State secrets to foreigners. He is said. to have decided upon a hurried flight with such. of his household goods as he could collect in the time; but learing that his movements in broad daylight would attract attention, be dispatched a trusty servant to set fire to his
