Owing to a rasiour amongst the Chinese that the Euro. pean manner of drawing lots was entrust. worthy a drum holding the lots was takes to the
· Town Hall and the lots were drawn in the same way as is being done at the Kiangan and other lotteries for prizes every month in the Chinese suburbs. This proceduro apparently satisfied the Chinese opium divan proprietors as being "all straight." Three prominent Chinese gen tlemen residing amongst us, were present, Namely, Messrs. Shea Tun-ho (Director of the Imperial Bank of China), Char Lai-fong (Com piadore to Meara, Jardine Matheson and Co.): and Yu Ya-ching (Compradore to the Nether. lande Bank), these gentlemen having been asked by ibo Municipal Council to witness the proceed- ings in order to give confidence to the Chipeta concerned.
