As it goes without saying that the develop ment of the mercantile deal must on the whole correspond to the growth of the trade with dis-
· tant countries, it is at the first glance rather astopishing that we find in a recent statistical report the number of German seagoing ships given a 4,8co in 1880 against only 4:430 in 1907. For the requirements of importa tion and exportation the number of ves sels available is hot this decisive factor, but everything depends on the capacity of carrying freight. If we look to the figures of tabdage, the aspect is accordingly totally different. For we find now an aggregate of 2,639,000 tons against only 1,170,000 la 1880, showing an increase by one and a third

seven years. But not only have the steamers grown larger, but there was also a steady | displacement of sailing vetiels by freight steamers, and, therefore, by the faster voyages of the steamers a still more increased carriage of goods. There was, however, a more rapid abolition of sailing vessels in favour of steamers from 1880 to igro than in the seven years of this century. It is remarkable that as late as 1880 German sailing vessels had al- together five times the displacement of the steamers and numbered even twelve times as many. Not less than 44 jo sailing vessels are, given in the returns for 1880 against only 374 steamers, the corresponding tonnages being 975,000 and 196,201, But in too the number of sailing vessels had dwindled, dowo to 2466, while that of the steamors had risen to 1293. There were even then nearly twice as many sailing vessels as steamers, while the toonage of the former with 5800 tons was only about one-half that of steamers. In the last seven years the number of sailing vessels remained stationary, while the steamers showed an in- *crease from -1293 to 1833 and from 1,150,000 to 1,100,000 tons.
4
A very interesting point of comparison is the muster of the draws employed on, sailing and steam vessels. Thirty years ago there were 30,000, hands on board German sailing vessels; to-day there are only 13,000, showing a larger reduction in hands than in tonnage. On board' the steambis, however, we find the enormous increase from 8.100 to $3,200. hands all told. Rather more than six times as many men are Dow required for the service on board'a fleet of merchant ateamers that in tonnage is more than ten times as large as it was twenty-seven years ago—Continental Correspondence.
