The total deathsregistered prabheird 531,281, giving a fate of 15.4 per thousand of the popular tion. Of these 113,895 were infants under one year of age, a proportion of 132 per thousand births. This rate was 4 per thousand above the rate for the previms, year, hut 15 per thou- rand below the mean proportion-in-the preced- log ten years.

WHERE WOMEN LEAD,

Among the deaths recorded there was reputed centenarians 16 of whom were males and 49 females. Only 1.53 per cent, of the deaths were uncertified-this being the luwest proportion of uncertified deaths' ever-recorded, The esister-General's figures are based upon an estimated population of 34,547,016, the total population of the United Kingdom in the middle of the jerrheing estinted at 43,661,097, Commenting in his final remarks upon the declining birth rate the Registrar-General says there is no present indication of an arrest in this decline, the provisional returns for the first three quarters of 1907 showing a decrease in Each quarter as compared with those for the corresponding quarters of the previous year.

A HEALTHY@YRAR, Spenking generally, the year was a favourable one from the standpoint of the pational health. On the one hand the steady decrease re- corded for several years in the mortality from tuberculosis was practically sustained through out the year. Several other diseases, including“ most of the infectious diseases of childhand," have shown diminished fatality.

On the other hand, the sad pre-eminence of cancer-the one disease that hitherto has evinced no abatement of fatality was fully maintained in the year under notice, the rate showing an increase of 32 per million on the rate for 1905.

Diabetes mellitus and diarrhoea were also amongst the diseases which proved more fatal than the average,
