DOCTORS, FEES!

SUPPLY: OF WORKERS EXCEEDS THE", DEMANDS

The British Medical Journal points a gloomy picture of the future of young doctors,; In. = few years' time they will be seeking dyliving in vain. "Unless, they are fortified with private means, the chances of establishing" A' paying practice are becoming more and, more remote. There are too many doctors for the patients. There is too much competition for the work and the fees..

CHANGING METHODS. The medical profession is in a state of Iran- [330sition, Old rules no longer apply, and that is one of the reasons why old-fashioned, practis |tioners are so gloomy about the future. The discoverierqaf Lister and Pasteur runde an enournous difference. Operations whịch vìed to be regarded as dangerous is the last degree became comparatively simple." Sir Frederick Treves specialised on the appendix, Hundreds of men followed in bis, footsteps. They's not up in Harley-street and other wealthy neigh bourhoods, and looked to make, names and fortunes for themselves, because (luckily for the nation) the young 'doctor is an agthusiast with a profound belief in his future. What happened? Many of these men failed to make a living, and had to join the band of genemi practitioners, with the result that, there was an immediate congestion and competition.

It is the same in most branches of special work. Men devote themselves to the earland,

health work, or to research. We are trying to do something new, to learn something new. If Wright's opsenic treatment for tuberculosis prove a success any number of men are pre- pared to specialian on it. Necessarily, as the expenses are heavy, there must be many failures. We are feeling our way, and, forthe time being, the supply of workers exceeds the demand,

A DISMAL PICTURE.

In many ways the profession has got to adapt itself to new conditions, Many peo ple go to hospitals now who used to consult the family doctor; and the Midwives: Act; by insisting on the women being trained, has made it possibla, for midwives to under take cases which used to go to the doctor as s matter of course. All these things tend to re- duce incomes and to make the struggle keener, Doctors with established practices, being hu-j man, naturally try to dissuade young men from entering the profession, and making the, com petition keeper still.

They make the picture too dismal.... New work for doctors is opening up on every hand, The Colonies are absorbing more and more doctors, and the new public health regulations, particularly as to the steady inspection of school, children, will fargely widen the scope of oc cupation. As the nation realises that national kashik means national wealth, the demand, for doctors will increase.

+

a matter of Hábit,

Seeing the doctor is largely a matter of habit of opportunity, 1 'know of a small ceihedral city where a grievance was made'asme years. ago because a new doctor dared to settle in the place. The old practitioners, who had cut' up the city amongst them, were very wroth,” What is the result? That city now has twice as many doctors as it used to have, although the population has remained stationary-and they are all doing well. It merely means that under the former regime, when medical attendance was slack and dear, people suffered in silence' unless their ailment was serious. They have. discovered that it pays' to see the doctor at once, rather than bo miserable for weeks. Foer ato-lówer and work it harder, but the doctor's incomes, are practically the same.
