The Anglo Russian Convention.

LONDON 7th February.

During a debate to the House of Lords on the Anglo-Russian Convention, Lord- Curzon said the fairness of the bargain was doubtful in respect to Afghanistan, bad in respect to Tibet,, and wore in respect to Persia; the allocation of the Russian sphere was unjustifiable, economically and geo- graphically. In regard to Chumbi, the treaty. was an absolute surrender and almost a humiliation, and British preponderance in Tibet, which was assured, is now sacrificed. Lord Fitzmaurice said that, frankly, the Goverment was in favour of reducing their engagements in Tibet to a minimum, and withdrawing from the policy of adventure.

Two men, who were working near the 'tween deck at the time, gave a graphic story of the Incident. The report of the explosion,” they said, "was loud, indeed, and it shook the ship from end to end. We did not know what hid. happened and could not make immediate fo vestigation, for.a.second after the explosion fire broke out and a cloud of smoke and flame shot up from the bold. THE LISBON TRAGEDY.

SHANGHAI JOURNAL'S COMMENTS.

In chronicling the tragedy in Portugal, the NCD News writes, editorially-World- wide honor and detestation will have been evoked by the terrible outrage perpetrated at Lisbon Tay Saturday. For foll design and cold-blooded execution of purpose the attempt to extirpate the, Hoyal House of Portugal must be risked among the worst political murders of Katory. The revolting brutality of the assasination of King Alexander and Quesn Draga of Servia' was „lacking in the Lisbon tramdy-for at least the murderers refrained from levelling their weapons at the heroic Queen is she vainly endeavoured to shield her oldest for-but a similar purpose prompted equally cowardly butchery of defenceless
