We read in the Shanghai Times A. S. WATSON & CO., that now that the fateful days of settle ment-which mean so much for our Chinese LIMITED,

friends are passed, one looks in vain for the flood of disasters and the Wreck of ruin which gloomy prophets have for a long time been predicting as the certain accompani: ment of the "dawn of the New Year. It is impossible not to feel some relief at the state of affairs. A year ago there were several beary Chinese failures and one prominent Chinese, financier absconded, and it has been currently reported during the last few days that the smashes this year would be not only much greater, but much more numerous than for many years. Happily these dire portents have not been realised and we are happy to know that things are much brighter than they have been for a long time. There have been "a few failures, but they 1.05 bays not been of any great magnitude and will not affect the general satisfactoriness of affairs. The fire alarm was sounded, and the brigade had some difficulty in fockling the scene of the supposed fire, Secing their ser- vices were not needed they returded to their quariors. The patty officer who broke the window received a bad cut on the heel while so doing, but it was nothing serious. Had the fire not been discovered when it was consider able damaga might bave been done, and the prompt action of the police and naval men is highly to be commended. The cause of the fire was the fusing of some electric wires be bind a steam heater.

We regret to state (saya the Nagaki Fress of the z8th ult.), that Mr. W. S. Korea. We under stand that deceased is believed to have con- tracted the disease in Vladivostock. The siri farily in the names of the two gentlemen wa merely coincidence as they were not related

to sach other.

It is believed that some time must yet elapse before a settlement of the Chiestas question in arrived at, there being a wide gulf between the views of the Governments of China and Japan. The Chinese Government claims the territory which forms the boundary between Korea and Manchuria and among a section of Japanese politicians there is an opicon in favour of abandoning the claim in the territory in order that the existing friendly relations between Japan and Chios may be maintained. It is ex pected that some proposal may be jointly made by Great Britain, America and Germany having in view the settlement of the question, the dragging on of which will only tend to raise friction between Japan and China. *
