JOSEPH JOACHIME

THE MAN AND HIS WORK”

Few executive ailisis could look back, an it was given to Jos him to do, où an unbroken career of sixty-four years, and still fewer to a lifa which has been so rich in influence for good,

Three years ago, the intellectual world of London assembled at Quago's Hall to do hon- our to the 60th anniversary of his first appear- ante in our midst. What was said then by Mr. Balfour and others will not readily be fore getlen. It was only fitting that the chief speaker should have been a man of aminence, in the world of affairs and in intellectual, spheres outside that of music, for Joachim's unique personality lifted him to a plane whence ho could help to mould the mind of his ago,”. His appeal had never been to musicians alone; it was always given to him to draw to his side nil that was best in the culture of his time, to the North-EastThe most distinguished pools, painters, and of the Colony,

THE SECRET OF IUS POWER,

The secret of his great power over the minds and souls of his hearais has often bean discuss ed. That which is essential in the greatest art must always be shrouded in a holy myntory, otherwise we might all be great artists but with him the solution is, after all, simplar. than in most cases. The key to the enigmi was in the perfect balance between the intellectual and the emotional sides of bis art and the lofty disregard for all inerély external effects. He grasped more than any other the difference be tween Wirkung" and "Effekt "that which moves the inner being, and that which specious- ly and meretriciously caresses the outer sent

It used to be said of him that no one could resist as successfully as he did the temptation to dazzle and bewilder his hearers by more feats of virtuosity; that, of course, is true, but it would probably have bean truer to say that, a mind as engrossed in the higher things of art could never be assailed by any such temptation in the ordinary way.

At the same time, when his powers werd.at' their best, he could perform the most astonishe ing technical feats with the most perfect, ease.' The criticism of his playing, which endelssoha wrote in 1844, when recommending the four- teen-year-old prodigy to his friend Klingamann; remained tras until the very fast days of his life, and it too, familiar to need reproduction here. Less well known (but equally true, and perhaps more remarkable in view of its author. ship) was the summing-up of his playing by Gounod, when he called it "ai sago et si' chaud "so wise and so warm-hearted,

ENGLAND'S DEBT TO JOACHIM.

· England owes a peculiar debt to Joachim, There are in the whole repertoire of the art po compositions more familiar than the Concerto of Beethoven, the Concerto of Brahms, and the Chaconge of Bach. It is due to Joachim thay they became known here at all; but his services in skin maoparį are so much a matter of history that they are in danger of being forgotten." F. G. F100,

Director

Equaily great were his services to the world. ul music in forcing it to know and to love the

· Posthumous Quartets of Beethoven, the Cham ber music of Brahms, and the genius of.Bchu-- mann. The renaissance of music in England in the latter half of the nineteenth century is due principally to four men-Dr. Joachim, Sir August Manns, Sir Charles Halle, and Dr, Richter, and of these joachim was the first in order of time, and the others'profited by what he had done before they were called upon to begin their activity. The old Popular Con- ceris, are no more, but the work they did la the days of Joachim's prime will never be for gotten.

TEACHER AND COMPOSI R. As a teacher, Joachim exercised an infvence "such as no ontrer ever-wielded-before-him-and- such as is not likely to fall to the lot of any other. A great deal might be written on this: point; but the most striking proof of 'it was afforded by the Jubilee concert given in Beilia in 1904 in honour of the sixtieth anniversary of. his first public appearance, whe i the orchestra included 116 violins and violas and 24 violon- cellos-al! aṛtists of ástablished psiition, and, many of them teachers of high rank, who had been at one time or another hii pupils. More over, his influence pervades every nook and corner of the Hochschule of Berlin..

Ava composer, he achieved a certain measure of distinction, but the circumstances of his busy life were not favourable to the full develop ment of his creative gifts, Hungarian Concerto and his share in the Hungarian Dances of Brahms will, however, servo to perpetuate his memory.

His inability to follow the fater developments of the New Germ in School has beep regretted by many of his admirers, and many more thought his method of effecting his severance from the Weimar party; injudicivus, but of the sincerity of his convictions na one ever had the smallest doubt, and his opposi tion, never influenced by personal motives, was always free from the smallest suspicion of bigotry.

THE JOACHIM QUARTET, Finally, a few words must be said about the Quartet, which boura, hia, naine, and tightly re- garded as the ideal of what such a body should be. In all the qualities which go to great ca. semble playing, it was for many years perfec- tion, and each individual artist in it was a worthy follower of his master, in his great virtues of self-effacement in the presence of the music he was interpreting. Its not a little characteristic of the less'admirable side of British musical life that the Quarter did not reach England till-for inevitable reasons-iip perfections were slafitly on the wase, though. it had enjoyed a'worldwide I, me for almost a generation in fact, almost ever "slacéifa foundation in 1869.-By "Staccato in Morn- ing Leaderyog
