"Continuing our way into the outskills of the town, we came to the antive or, more properly speaking, the Kabyle quarter. This neighbourhood is neither town nor country.. Sand and din pervado everywhere and every.. thing. Houses there are pone: Streets there are none. The former are replaced by rode wooden or canvas buts, with disty palisades, over which a few prickly bushes occasionally twine dusty tendrils. The occupants in a the doors, or just inside, and look at one ip dreamy amazement, not anmixed with resent- mcat, at the intrusion as we pass. This native the quarter for smell and dirt beggars description, and the town itself becomes by comparison quite a thing of beauty. This garden was more of an oasis 'in a desejt - paradise in a hades.
