MONTE CARLO HELL
OUTCRY OVER EUROPE'S FLAGUE SPOT.
"How long are the nations of Europa going
to tolerate this plague spot [Honte Carlo] in
·heir miðat ?"
This the pertineat question which is put by i correspondent of the. Times, who has resided for some time at Monte Carlo, near the villa la. which the Goolds rented a aviali fù. ⠀
The question is one, be contends, that should be agitated in the Press and Chancelleries of every European capital, whose gilded youth ara ruined annually in scores.
On the same day the Goolds are supposed to have committed the crime there occurred at Castollemaro the suicide of a young English and American couple on iksir honeymoon who had been ruined at Monte Carlo.

APPEAL TO THE FRENCH JOVERNMENT. Some years ago (writes a Morning Leader representative) an attempt was made to get'
French Government to put down the gam: ONE FOURRO Sant Print bling-des at Monte Carlo. An international petition was presented to the Senath and the Chamber, which set forth that through the *gambling "Monte Carlo bad become a nest of corruption and a centre of unhealthy infusaces, the deplorable effects of which were more and more" fell. The jubles attracted and retainad in the neighbouring towns a whole population of corrupt man and women living on vice and endeavouring by all means in their power to propagate.it."

he scandal went clean out of mind.
QUITE A NUMBER OF SUICIDES. When the present writer was at Nice it wan his duty to investigate quite a number of Monis Carlo suicides. Most of them were those of -eckless people who had lost their own or other „people's money, and for whom lit's sympathy could be felt. Either through cupidity or In the endeavour to make sufficient to replace mo- eys they had stolen they were attracted to the gamblers' casino.
But there w is one very dreadful case amongst them. A young married couple from Lyons ware staying at Nice. The busband, used to o across to Monte Carlo to risk a lonis ortwo, the young wife thought. But apparently he staked all ho possessed. One day hè did not come back. He was found shot near the Casino. It was a clear case of suicida.

THE DEATH ROLL
It is rather a remarkable fact, and would' seem to indicate that Monte Carlo has to an ⚫xtent lived down the strong opposition that wat arrayed against it. 15.0r 20 years ago, that only one book depicting its shady aida has been published during the present century. That is Les Memoires d'an Policer de Munte Carlo," printed in Paris. But there is sufficient in this to prove the place to be a disgrace to civilisation,
One has to go back to earlier works to get an
idea of the curse the Casino has been to so- ciety. The "Histoire des Crimes et Suicides' leclares that during the 15 years of the life of the gaming rooms before the records com- menced it is estimated that 1,000 suicides look place.
TWO HUNDRED DEATHS A YEAR. From actual statistics kept, it is said that after that period they went on at the rate of 200 a year-there are instances where three
have occurred in a single day. Anyone in- terested in this subject will find nearly a hundred pages of tabulated suicides, giving names where possible-but there is an app:l-
ing Dumber of "unknowns"--and details. One record runs!

There is a very curious thing noted about the la.Bag of 150 lbs.net $2,70 per Bag suicide of an Englishman at Monte Carlo. The ramark on the case is that "his wife is a mem her of the Association for the Abolition of the. Gaming Rooms at Monte Carlo,"
Glancing, through the gruesome list, one is struck by the varied ways that desperate men and women adopted to put an end to their lives. Suicide, fike crime, is imitative, so no good purpose warild be served even to indicate how some of the penniless wretcher found death,
DEFRAUDING THE CABIND.
The policeman's book is written in lighter vein. Without appreciating it be shows the corruption of the place. He tells with a good de I of amovement how a dishonest employco and a set of sharpers defrauded the Casino of 470,000 francE.

There is a system of landing money by the hour, so it is easy to believe that in some cases the interest on a loan may work out pretty heavily.
ROBBED OF HIS WINNINGS.
The policeman relates a Monte Carlo classic, -wo should call it a chestnut-al how when a lucky punter was preparing to pocket the maximum of a win on the roulette tábla some. body shouted Bomb," and everybody had share of the, stake and winnings except the man who was entitled to them.
