The Tai Shun, by which the party were travelling, did not put into port until late in the after noon when all the completed arrangements had to be called off. Speculation was rife as to whether the inclement weather had dotaised the China Merchants' steamer, or some other -reason should be assigned for the inordinate de- lay in the vessel's arrival. On inquiry yesterday at the new offices of Carlowitz & Co. in Ikuta-maye it was learned that the firm's total loss in Saturday's fire was roughly estimated at about linlf a million yen.

From the official report of the fire' we learn that Messrs. TO-DAY'S PROGRAMME.

The programme for to-day was then ar ranged and as it will appear from the fol. lowing account of the day's proceedings, the. aged Viceroy. (H.E. is 67) had a somewhat full day of it. It speaks much for his endurance that H.E. Chang could have gone through the day's ceremonials without feeling fatigue from the warmth of the weather. A visit to the Commodom, the official landing, a call upan H.E. Major General Broadwood, C.B., Com. manding the Troops in South China, then the formal visit to the representative of the King in Hongkong, followed by the luncheon given by Sir Frederick and Lady Lugard and later the entertainment at the Chidees Club, and then back on board the Sam Dong, to receive the return calls of the British representativer in Hongkong, were all included in the proceedings of to-day.
