His latest offence is that be has allowed 70,000 bags of sait to be imported into Manchuria from the Japanere territory of Liaoning, and that when this salt was seized by the Customs authorities He ordered it to be returned to the Japanese As salt is a Chinese monopoly, the importation of this amount is a serious matter and ought Dever to have been overlooked by the Viceroy. They urge that," unless strict measures are taken, the trade in Manchuria is liable to fall irto Japanese hander, especially if, as alleged, the Viceroy has agreed to allow a certain amount of Japanese salt to be imported an- sually. Meanwhile, the Japanese authorities are claiming compensation for the illegaliai- zure of the salt, and adduce the fact that the cousigument has been returned to the owpers as proof that the seizure was ultra vires. It is probable, however, that the goods were re turned to the Japanese by Tantai Tao Ta-chun, Director of the Bureau of Foreign Affairs at Mukden acting without the instructions ́or knowledge of his superiors, H.E. The spawning of fishes was retarded ; oysters, clams and their kin were killed, and there was great monality among other types. Fishes that frequent deep waters were somewhat pro- tected from conditions prevailing at the surface and escaped death, but evidently they were thrown into a panic that caused them to leave. their natural hunting grounds, for men fishing from small boats caught species which never had been brought up before except by a special deep water dredge.

on the teachings of Confucius in a very bumble way on the top floor of No. 20 Moil street, says the New York Tribune. In all that time, day and night, the odours of barning incense and Chinese tapers, or "prayer sticks,” bave per- vaded the room. But it was rumoured last work in Chinatown that “the great joss house," by which title this temple of worship is best known to visitors and also to the habitues of this section of the city, was to be torn down or at least closed for some months that the build ing might be altered.
There was much uneasiness among the followers of Joo Keaou for some days, and; however, there is much rejoicing in the Mott street temple, because the attendants there received word from Jastrow Alexander, the owner of the building, that his plane for im proving the great joss house and also the three Doyers street would be carried out under the story building in the rear and Nos. 11 and 13. supervision of Maximilian Zipkes, the architect, without disturbing the religious, sanctuary,
Mr. Alexander is State Inspector of Gar Meters. He intends to improve the premisas with an arcade building, extending from Doyers street to Mott; street, which will cost $15,000 and remind those who have visited Peking of the store buildings there.
On the facades will be 'healls of dragons and of strange looking fish, the like of which have never been caught by truthfal fishermes, and which show that China not only has numerous street fakers, but many nature fakers. The
work of tearing down the Dozers-st. building was begun, yesterday. On the plot will be erected a three story building And the five story structure in the seat and the Molt-st. building are to be remodelled, so that there will be an arcade over the combined parcels.
