THE KNIGHT COMMANDER"

On the 16th ult. Major Austrotber-Gray ask- ed the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether it is the intenti ́n of the Government to abandon the clainis against the Russian Government for the sinking of the British ship Knight Commander.

Sir E. Grey: The answer is in the negative.

„CHINKERBILWAY CONTRALIS.

On the 15th ult. My Rees, asked the Secre tary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he was in a position to state the result of negotia tion with the Government of China relative to, their obligations to British, subjects in respect of railway contracts.

Mr. Runciman, who replied, said :-Final contracts have been concluded in the case of two railway concessions-viz, those from Shanghai to Nanking and from Canton to the boundary of Hongkong; and the work of con struction is proceeding on the former railway. As regards the remainitig British railway 'con- cassions, begotiations are still proceeding; and though progress is slow, His Majesty's Go- vernment cannot anticipate that the Chinese Government will fail in the end to respect the obligations which they have incurred in regard to them.

THE COMKI,

A valued correspondent, who had not yet seen the notice issued by Sicawci Observatory, writes as follows;-I have just been watching the comet (3 a.m.). For some nights Phave been up about this hour zoj ŋyt be splendour of Pleiades and. Orion rising. My interest and curiosity were aroused yesterday by the positive assurance of some of my Chinese friends who stir early for their woodcutting that they had seen in the 'eastern sky a strange slar with a streaming fail. To my asianish-. ment. I have just found it even so and that the comet is a reality. It is perfectly. clear and may be seen deep below the Pleiades and close by Orion van It.is

Chinese have been greatly agitated by rumours of a great star to appear and collide with the earth. I have comforted them with the assur- Apce that the only obtarved and known come! to retura is Halley's, two years hence..... I remember that the comet in 1861-1 (at the time of the Taiping Rebellion), which I also saw, greatly alarmed the people.
