MATHI KA ORAI"
THE MAORI WAR CRY.
| ITS-MEANING.
A good deal of interest has been evidenced in what is formed the war cry of the New Zea land football team. Undoubtedly, it forms' distinct fentors in connection with their ex- hibitions of Rugby poepne (football),
Properly speaking, from the strictly Maori standpoint, it is not a war cry at all. The jeal Maori war cry, as used by the natives in the old days, when they rushed, with pounamu mere (greenstone battle-axe) in band, into baile, was-
"Ake, ake, his kaha,” which means “De strong for ever and ever."
The New Zealand, football team' used this war Cey'in 1995, and its inspiriting effect on the | team as a whole was an important factor in the
success of that memorable tour.
The present "ery"`is really the first portion of what is known as the Maori baka, or war y
dance. In the olden days the tribes, before golog into battle, worked up their e urage and Bothusiasm by performing a baka in the pre- seco of their 'Rangitira "chief), Then they set out to meet the enemy, and when they espied them resbed at them with wild cries of "Ake, Aků, Kịa Kahafa. Very often, the crash." of a more, wielded by the hind of a Nagtie maniapoto, a Ngatirangitibi, in Ngalitulsa, or an. Arawa, went with timely roar of "Kaba?" resounding over the field. "Kaha" and broken skull were harmonising realities.
There is no doubt, however, of the enormous influence of the baka dance upon the fealings of either Maori wurzior or "All Black" foot, baller. The words and gestures, the waving of the arms, stamping of the feet, and the rolling of the oyer, alt in perfectly evan tie (ifths danca in performed properly) hava a great effect on the individual. : Of course, only the natives understand the true inner meaning of the words when grouped together, Taken separately and analysed by the European scholar, they' have not the same meaning, apparently, a that given to them by the immortal tradition." of the Maori.
"Ka mate, ka mate, ka ora, ka ora," trana. lated, moans, “It is death, it is death; it is life, It is life." This, to the European war, saunde somewhat meaningless. But the Maori of old translated those words to mean. "We are go ing into a struggle which insans either life of death." In football, of course, the Maori (for indicates a Typhoon the native is a great footballer) now translates to the North-West | "cra" and "mate,” as "win" or ! İnse,” of the Colony.
Red Signals indicate that the centre
