THE CAPTURE OF RAID

.MACLEAN.

London, July 4

No uneasiness is felt here about the safely. of General Harry MacLean, when is held as a hostage by the notorious Monvish bandit, Rai. suli, until the Sultag of Morocco comes to his terms. It is believed that so powerful a per- sonage as a hostage Raisuli will drive a hard bargain with the Sultan."

MacLean's handsome daughter is credited with having greatlinßuence with the Cultan. In "fact she is styled “the Empress of Marocco.”— The capture of the"general was carefully planned.

For, some time General MacLean, acting on behalf of the Sultan, had been trying

to persuade Raisoli torume.n peaceful mode of life, and the bandit leader. ap parently had showed signs of 'willingness to meet the wishes of the Moroccan authorities. with the result that General MacLean was" en- trusted with the task of taking some presents from the Suligo to Raisuli in the hope of final. ly persunding him to come to terms. These Rifts consisted of horses and tonls, and to escort them to his stronghold Paisuli sent fifteen of his banditti in the general to act as a body-guard. Accompanied by these men General MacLean journeyed toward Rouina.

:

Maclean concealed the death, carrying the corpie in a gorgeous golden litter until he reached the capital, where he smuggled the body in through a họld in the wall and then met and proclamed the new Sultan........................

MacLean knew the news of the death would be the signal for a military revolt, which would result in an enemy of his being placed on the throne.
