AN OBJECT OF THE C, MBINE, One of the objec's of the combine was to reduce the cost of advertising. Levers had spent in advertisements about (wo millions, and last year had a contract with the Daily Mail. for something like Scoa. But the combina tion wanted to save in the matter of advertising in the public press 203,000 a year. Counsel commented severely on aʼisiter written to. Mr Lever, on October 18, in which it was stated

Lord Northcliffe himself, commentel coup. sel, was somewhat 'in favour of combinations, not to manufacture soap, but public opinion. (Laughter.) One could hardly believe Lord Northcliffe authorised that letter to be written, because at the very moment there was being prepared in the. Daily Mail offion the, most damaging statements that could be imagined As regards Messrs. 'Lever, Counsel asserted that the Daily Mail knew perfectly well there was no fraud on Lever Brothers' part. There had never been a change as regarded the twelve-ounce tables. Lithe defendants prove, that one single ounce had ever gone out of Levers factory that, was not up to the full standard they guaranteed.

Sir Edward Carson asserted that the Daily Mail suppressed any letters which were favour able to Messrs. Levers, yet they said that the majority of the customers, and even Lever's. own clerks, were ignorant about the change from fifteen to sixteen ounces. Could they' produce any invoice clerk who was ignorant ? In their campaign of falsehoods the Daily Mail could not remember from day to day what they had written previously.
