NEXT TO THE SULTAN.
For nearly 30 years he bas lived in Morocco, and next to the Sultan, he is, perhaps, the best known and most widely respected person in that fawless country. Not only has he drilled the Moorish army into some semblance of a disciplined body, but he has been the guide, philosopher, and friend of the Moors in every question, difficult or otherwise, which has brought them into touch with Europe,
He bas, of course, been entrusted with many delicate missions, and has had many stirring advectures. He accompanied the late Sultan on numerous expeditions, and was with him during the last march fron. He has up- held the British name and fame with signal success in the most exclusive, mast izolated, and, with the exception perhaps of China, the most hostile country in which a white man cae live, Courage, tact, and temper have conquer. ed for him, is a lonely and difficult position, the esteem and reverence of a race instinctively hostile to Europeans."!

WADDINGTONS ÍRIAL.
DENIAL OF VARIOUS Citardes,
Brussels, July 3.
M. Huysmans, leading counsel for the Wad- diagios family, commenced to-day his speech in reply to that of the Public Prosecutor in the trial of Carlos Waddington for the murder of Ernesto Balmaceda, of the Chilian Legation. He contended that any man who saw his mother and sister unjustly assailed and slander- ed as in this case would have acted in the manner in which Carlos Waddington had done.
"An irresistible moral impulse compelled him to act as an assassin, Counsel reproached the family of Balmaceda with having cadeavoured to tarnish the reputation of Mils, Waddington. Balmaceda, the advocats contended, was the person responsible for this terrible drame, and ho was really the one who ought to be. accused.
Counsel denied the statement that Mils. Waddington had had a lover before Balma ceda, and affirmed that she was dishonoured by the murdered man under a promise of marri age., Balmaceda had reallý „played a moni strous comedy,
The advocata funther maintained that cer tain letters written by members of the Bal. naceda family in the dossier were 'destroyed and that the missing documents were favourable to the accused,
