SANITARY BOARD.

18th just. Owing to the Races being held to-morrow the usual fortnightly meeting of the Sanitary Board was held this, Monday, aftemoon, in stead of to-morrow, Tuesday, as usual, the usual members being present. The following busi ness was transacted...

- NEW MARKET FOR KOWLOON. The Hon. the Registrar General, submited. the following minute relative to the erection of

a new market at Kowloon Point for the sale of European food. I find that in 1900 the Go vernment promised to prepare a scheme for providing a market at Kowloon Point for the sale of European food. The son-Chinese. population of the Kowloon Peninsular was tben 895. It is now 2,245. "In 1901 the Euro- pean population was 668, it is now 1,467. 1 should like these facts brought to the notice of the Board...

ANOTHER GRAVE QUESTION. Correspondence relative to the proposed erection of a cemetery for the Fukinese in Survey District No. 1, Kowloon City, was laid on the table. Ng Ling applied for the sanc- tion of the Board to make use of › certain. pièce of ground, a plan of which he submitted, in Kowloon City, for a public cemetery for the Fukinese residing in this Colony. The ground referred to was the applicant's own property, and bad an area of about 150 acres, and it was his intention to give it up for the use of his country- men as a cemetery, if, however, from a sani- tary point of view the site was not suitable, be was prepared to surrender the site to Govern- ment in exchange for another which might be considered suitable on the Kowloon side.

The Assistant Medical Officer of Health minuled: I don't sed any objection from a anitary point of view to the site, of the pro posed cemetery. I think a Register should be. kept open to inspection by the Sanitary De- partment as, I understand, in the Chistian cemetery near here. We have no jurisdiction at all.

The Sanitary Surveyor said the site was suitable for the purpose, as the Fukincse was only a very small community.

The Medical Officer of Health minuted: should like first to know, what the opinion of the D.P.W. is on the subject, as the allocation of this site as a cemetery may interfere with the projected laying out of Kowloon-in regard to roads, etc., in which case it is a useful suggestion,

The Hon. the 'Director of Fublic Works said: I think there is no objection to this site being used as a cemelery.

The Hon, the Registrar General minuted: It is so difficult to find suitable cemetery sites on Crown land that I think this offer of private land should be accepted.

Mr. Shelton Hooper minuted; I think this offer should be accepted, provided, that the land is surrendered to Government, and the cemetery be subject to the regulations of the Sanitary Board..

Mr. Lau Chu Pak minuted: the Hon. the. Registrar, General. Such a generous offer should be accepted.

OVERCROWDING.'

The report of the inspector relative to over- crowding during the month of January, 190, was fubmitted, and showed that during that tooth 435 persons were ordered to vacate overcrowded premises, and remove to other Localities, "
