Dwarf Rose was last, Past the Stand Southwold led the field from Black Pansy and Zulu Chief. This was the order as far as the climb when the second, third and fourth ponies raced level and Dwarf Rose bringing the rear several lengths behind. Blue Nile and Zulu Chief then raced up to the leader, and on entering the straight the best finish of the day was witnessed. Master, as usual, abandoned the rails for the outer course, and steered the Nile home a com fortable winner with three lengths to spare, Black. Pansy second, and Dwarf Rose a good third. Zulu Chief was last.

Ben Eion's chance for the race was discount.. ed by the slb. penalty he had to carry. Black Pansy accordingly claimed good patronage and Master's mount (Dwarf Rose) as usual had a good number of backers: The more adventurous ages staked spyte fivers on The Fride of Cadrow for a big "div" which, they did not get. The start was from the Football Stand. Manchurian Chief had the best positing near the rails, with Dwarf Mose right out. Man churian Chief was left behind when the flag dipped and Dwarf Rose showed first. Man- churian Chief was not slow in making up for his bad start and at once rushed up to the lead- er. At the climb Beaufort was second and closely following him his stable companion, the Pride of Cidzów was last. At the village then Ben Elon and Black Pansy together the

To-day was the Ladies' Pay of the an. nual Race meeting, and it was also the con: cluding day. The weather conditions were much the day as on the previous days; cold and windy, and towards the afternoon rain threatened to fall which, fortunately,, beld off, there being only a very slight drizzle to- wards the end of the day's proceedings.

There was the same enthusiastic gathering

Kingston was on the rails and Quorn on the outside course before the start which was a

good one. Cosmopolitan led the field passing the Stand closely pursued. by Kingston, Zapeter was third, Quorn fourth and White Blaze last. White Blaze worked up gradually and at the hill was racing for the first position which secured and maintained for the rest of the race, Triumph Rose sadly disappointed ex- pectations, and was pot even placed. The many friends of Mr. E. Von Stranch, late acting Commissioner of Customs In Wu- chow, and now of Nanning, will be glad to bear of his promotion to Députy Commissioner. The reasons given for not establishing the school on the completion of the school build--- ing were two, viz., that ibere was not sufficient. fund to ensure its prosperity; and, secondly, that some of the promoters objected to the school being opened at all on purely moral grounds. The party sustaining the latter objection con tended that as girl schools were frequently visited by so-called examiners and inspectors to report on the progress of the pupils, that abused their positions, and gave rise to scandal invariably these examiners and inspectors; etc, etc. Both these objections have now been nvercome; the gentry have collected a large sum of money between them and agreeing to
