HORSE BREEDING IN JAPAN.
IMPROVEMENT OF HARBOURS.
At a meeting of a Budget sub-committed on the 3rat ultimo a question was raised as to the Government's intentions in relation to horse breeding in 'apas,
Mr. Ani, in reply, stated that the number of bones in the Country was estimated at about 1,500,000. It was proposed to distribute about 1,500 selected animals in various parts of Japan, with a view to improving the breed. This work will be carried out within a period of eighteen years, commencing from 1506. The Government approved the establishment of racecouraçs as a means of improving home breeding, but full investigation into the character of all applications would be made before being granted.
At bother sub-committee meeting no off. cial statement was made concerning the im provement of several rivers in Japan to allow of ireer navigation. The Yodogawa, at Otaka, was mentioned in this connection.
Mr. Hara, the Home Minister, said that po pledge could be definitely given no to the term within which these improvements would be
carried out.
Mr. Ilirol, dealing with the two Hokkaido har bour-works schemos, stated that, afthough the Kushiro harbour was not a very important one, the work of improvement was nevertheless necessary with a view to futurs comineicial development.
