Turning first to the colonial mails, the work of collection for translilpment to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, India, and more remote settlements beyond the sens began is late November. The numbers generally shows `ed anʻlacicase, but in the case of New Zealand that increase was abnormal, 1,486 receptacles containing 21,800 parcels being sent there, agaliaut raro recepiacies containing 16,800 par.. cele last year.

A possible explanation is that a big exhibition. is being held 'next year at Christchurch,- and;

many people probably sent goode to be in time for the opening,

LONDON'S COLONIAL" POSTBAGO JENNI The total number of bags containing islters, newspapers, and packets sent out to the colonies and India: this Christmas" from London was

66,338, as compared with 64,176 bago last year. In addition, a very large number of parcels were sent, ail for distribution approximately on Christmas Day.

A special feature was the decrease in the number of charitable appeals sent out to the colonies. Whereas in former, years those sp pania had numbered close on three quarters of a raillion, an the present occasion they, only:', totalled a quarter of a million. In the case of India a great number of Christmas puddings

The incoming mails from the, colonies were also very heavy. On Friday, 21-Dec., the Celtic brought 2,888 bags, and it required 63, pair». horsed vans to convey them from Euston to the That mail included letters coming through Various railway stations and post-offices,

is estimated that in the Christmas period ex- tending from Friday, 2: Dec. to Tuesday, 25 Dec., a total of 60 millions of latters, packets,, postcards, etc., passed through the London post offices. The ordinary mail for such a period would amount to 30 millions. Christ mas, therefore, exactly doubled the work of the General Post Office

At the country section at Mount Pleasant, 190,000 bags were dealt with during the period.. The ordinary number is 110,000, but whereas the ordinary bags would only be balf filled, at Christmas they were overflowing, The mid- night collection, on the Sunday night was also five times in excess of the ordinary Sunday, night collection...

To cope with this" tremendous Increase of work between 7,000 and 8,000 additional meo,« largely drawn from the ranks of the unemploys. ed, were engaged. In addition to the auxiliaries, whose work, it, may be added, gava complete Batisfaction, the 20,000 regular employees worked on an average four hours a day each overtime.

Mr. J. Bruce, the Controller of the General Post Office, remarked to a reporter that 30 year ago Christmas made no difference at all to the work of the Post Office, and no special arrange. ments were made. At that time, however, heavy mails were the rule, on St. Valentine's Day, which nowadays made" no...appreciable- difference.

The novel sight is to be seen in the studios. of Mr. Harry Hems, at Exeter, of a Benedic line monk, attired in the habit of his order, only partially concealed by a white overall, plying mallet and chisel on the rough stons, carving it into aniztic designs.

The Very Rev. F. Maurus Matse, the monk. la question, is prior of Buckfont Abbey, and is studying the art of stons carving, in order to apply it to the rebuilding of the old ebbey which formerly stood at Buckfast,

A. Walters, of Westminster, architect to the community. The first load of stone was carted from a neighbouring quarry on 15 Dec. ; it will probably be some years before the last in drawn.

It was decided to rebuild the abbey church as a memorial to the late abbot Don Boniface. Natter, who lost his life by the wreck of the Sirio, on 4 Aug. Father. Auscar, the present sbbot, was one of the saved.

The whole of the dressing and pointing of the stone will be done by the monks, and. it in hoped the fathers will be sufficiently proficient in stone carving to undertake the more elaborate parts of the church.
